Meet the dogs of Whiritoa Beach
Updated: Nov 3, 2019
I didn't start out to write a book about dogs. But I noticed that dogs were finding their way into the frame whenever I took photos of my family surfing. Then I started noticing that dogs on our local beach have a social life of their own, and for many dogs a trip to the beach is more about hanging out with other dogs than anything else. The dogs are often quite oblivious to their humans once they meet up with another canine, and it doesn't take much more than an acceptable smell for a dog to gain a new friend to cavort with. Once a puppy learns some minor etiquette, they can be up and running with the pack in a short time and if they get it wrong, most times they only have to deal with a quiet cold shoulder from an older dog - this is all so much more straightforward than human interactions! I hope you enjoy meeting the dogs of Whiritoa as much as I enjoyed watching and drawing them.
